2013 Northern Virginia Four-Ball

Since the inaugural event in 1987 the Northern Virginia Four-Ball has not been a tournament that has produced a lot of repeat winners. Several players have won multiple times with different partners but only two teams, Gil Fitzhugh with Chris Turner and Rob Bain with Mike Howell have repeated and they both did it back-to-back – Fitzhugh/Turner in 1991-1992 and Bain/Howell in 2001-2002. Longtime playing partners Tony DeLuca (Raspberry Falls) and Dan DeRisio (Springfield), however, may have played the most as a team in the event and Monday captured their second championship at The Piedmont Club seven years after their first title in 2006 at Loudoun. A DeLuca birdie at the final hole gave the team a score of 7-under 65 which edged the team of Brian Marfori and Jason Dunn (Chantilly National) by one shot. Jason Pool (River Bend) and Rob Menefee (Belle Haven) were third with 67. Trey Treadwell and Matt Himes of the host club finished fourth with 68. Four teams tied for fifth at 69 – Andy Heye/Fred Glumsic (Chantilly National), Ron Clatterbuck/Rich Buckner (Chantilly National), Ken Wood/Gary Titus (Piedmont), Steve Brown/Scott Gilchrist (Piedmont) and Mark Barshow (Piedmont)/Ross McIntosh. The Northern Sections would like to thank The Piedmont Club for hosting this year’s championship and PGA professional John Montgomery and his staff for their support.  Final Results

2013 Northern Virginia Amateur

Jason Pool saw his three shot lead over VSGA Player of the Year candidate Jon Hurst shrink to one shot with three holes to go, then birdied holes 16 and 18 to win by three and capture his second Northern Virginia Amateur championship this afternoon at Mount Vernon CC. Pool’s victory capped a pretty good year by most anyone’s standards and Hurst’s second Poolplace finish gives him the points lead in the VSGA Player Rankings – one of the criteria considered in determining Player of the Year. Pool (River Bend Club), who entered the day with a two shot lead over Hurst (Lee’s Hill GC) and Dan Hill (Mount Vernon CC), maintained that lead over Hurst at the turn when both shot 36 with Hill falling 4 back after a 38. Pool increased the lead to three but Hurst cut the lead back to two with a 12-footer for birdie at the par four 14th where Pool missed from 9 feet for birdie. Pool then three putted from 45 feet at the par five 15th for bogey cutting his margin to one. At the 187 yard par-3 16th, however, Pool’s iron shot into the wind never left the flag and he made the 15 footer for birdie to push the lead back to 2. After both missed the green on the 17th to the left and made bogie, the door for Hurst to gain the two strokes back appeared open when he put his approach to inside 20 feet and Pool left his 54 feet in the fringe. Pool eliminated any drama, however, when he holed his putt, resulting in the three shot win. Pool had 70-71-141 while Hurst had four straight 36s for 72-72-144. Previously this year Pool had qualified for the US Mid-Amateur, was a semi-finalist in the Washington Metropolitan Amateur, finished sixth in the Washington Metropolitan Mid-Amateur and was third with partner Rob Meneffe (Belle Have CC) in the Northen Virginia Four-Ball.

Tim Krouse (Westwood CC) shot 75-74-149 to finish third. Rick Peel (Westwood CC) with 75-75 and Andy Heye (Chantilly National GCC) with 77-73 tied for third at 150. Jim Nirich (Stonewall GC), 78-73, Rick Buckner (RTJ GC), 76-75, and Dan Hill (Mount Vernon CC), 72-79, tied for 5th at 151. The Northern Sections would like to thank Mount Vernon CC, PGA Professional Bryan Armstrong and General Manager/Director of Golf Pete Van Pelt, PGA, for hosting this year’s championship and for their continued support of amateur golf in the Washington metropolitan area.  Results
