Piedmont Wins First A-Team Championship- Defeats Chantilly National in Finals
April 18, 2015

When Chantilly National won their semifinal match Saturday over Washington Golf, the story line for the finals was set – to which team would the phrase “the third time is the charm” best apply? The Piedmont Club had made it to the finals twice before, last year against Belle Haven and in 2007 against Loudoun, but had never won the title. Would their third shot at the championship be the charm? Chantilly National CC, on the other hand, had tied Army Navy for the most A-Team titles – seven – when they last won in 2002. They had advanced to the finals twice since then, in 2003 against International and again in 2010 against Evergreen, but could not surpass Army Navy on either occasion. Would the third try in 2015 be the charm? This year the phrase best fit Piedmont, who became the 17th different winner in the 45 years of the event with a 13.5 to 4.5 victory over Chantilly. The teams of Chad Hess – Randy Newsome and Trey Treadwell – Ryan Karnoff each won three points at home giving Piedmont a 6.5 to 2.5 advantage. At Chantilly, where the matches started approximately 60 minutes later, wins on the front nine by the teams of Scott Gilchrist – Ken Wood and Chris Martin – James Tomaseski pulled Piedmont to within one point of the victory, which Gilchrist and Wood clinched when they closed out the back nine and secured their three points.

Belle Haven Serious About Defending A-Team Title – Opens With Two Victories
March 27, 2015

With the weather playing havoc with the schedule for the early Division matches, one thing is for certain – Belle Haven appears to have no immediate plan to take down the traveling A-Team champions plaque they earned last year after a 26 year time warp from their first title in 1988. After a tough opening match 10-8 win over Ft. Belvoir last Saturday, they defeated new-comer Laurel Hill 13.5-4.5 on Sunday. They will meet undefeated Army Navy on Saturday which is making a statement of their own. Army Navy faced the same two oponents as Belle Haven in their opening matches and won each convincingly by the same 16-2 score. Also off to 2-0 starts are – South Riding, with wins over Prince William, 10-8, and Fauquier Springs, 13.5-4.5; and Washington Golf with victories over Trump National, 15-3, and Country Club of Fairfax, 16.5-1.5; and International with wins over Evergreen, 11-7, and Dominion Valley, 10-8.

A-Team Schedule Posted – Matches Kick-off March 15
Udated: March 11, 2015

The playoff schedule has been revised in order to provide an extra day for make-up matches in the preliminary rounds due to inclement weather. The Division schedule remains unchanged, but April 4th is now available should matches be postposed through a mutual decision among opposing team captains and professionals. See “Playoffs”on the A-team page for the revised schedule.

The weather forecast calls for above-freezing temperatures eight of the next 10 days – hopefully enough to get the snow and ice melted and the area courses playable for the start of the 2015 Northern Virginia A-Team matches – but don’t expect a lot of roll. Given the harsh winter and lack of playable days, however, the “unofficial” start of the golf season will be welcomed by most competitors, regardless of the conditions. Matches begin for eight of the full field of 28 teams on March 15, with defending champion Belle Haven opening their title defense on March 21 against Ft. Belvoir. The complete schedule of matches and subsequent results can be accessed on the A-Team page throughout the competition.

January 31, 2015

The dates for the 2015 Northern Virginia “A-Team” matches have been announced. The preliminary round-robin matches will be held March 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29. Belle Haven CC is the defending champion.

The matches are open to clubs in the VSGA Northern Sections (Northern Virginia East, Central, West and Fredericksburg sections). Shingler, Tallent Named VSGA Golfers of the Year
January 9, 2015

The VSGA has announced that Scott Shingler (Haymarket, VA) has been named the 2014 Virginia State Golf Association’s Golfer of the Year. Pat Tallent (Vienna, VA) shares the senior Player of the Year honors with Martinsville’s Keith Decker. This is the third time Shingler has received the award, having also been honored in 2009 and 2011. Tallent won the regular Golfer of the Year in 2007.

Shingler won the Northern Virginia Amateur for the fifth time, finished in the top five in three of the VSGA majors (quarterfinalist in the state amateur), advanced to sectional qualifying in the US Open and qualified for the US Mid-Amateur. Long recognized by his peers and the golfing community as not only an excellent player, but one of the true gentlemen of the game, Shingler continues to represent Northern Virginia and the VGSA at the highest level as evidenced through his consistent excellence.

Tallent has also been a mainstay in Northern Virginia, Washington Metro and VSGA championsips, as well as on the national level, for over four decades. At age 61, however, he has a reduced tournament schedule and is more selective in the events he plays. While Decker dominated this year’s state senior events, Tallent achieved his goal of winning a USGA major championship by capturing the US Senior Amateur after qualifying for 26 previous USGA events. Winning at age 61 and the manner in which he got to the finals was an exciting story completely missed by the Washington Post but had the interest and following of the local and statewide golfing community nonetheless. He survived a 15-for-13 playoff to get him into one of the final spots for match play, and as the 60th seed, became the lowest seeded player to win the championship. In addition to his US Senior Amateur win, Tallent and Decker partnered together to win the VSGA Senior Four-Ball. For more details see www.VSGA.org
