Entries are now open for the 3rd Annual NVGA Match Play Tournament at The Piedmont Club on 8-9 June.

New for this year:

(1) This event is now a VSGA ranking points event for Amateurs (age 49 and under), Seniors (age 50+), and Super-Seniors (age 65+). A new division for Legends (age 70+) is being added; this division will NOT be eligible for ranking points.
(2) We are planning for divisions of 16 Amateurs, 16 Seniors, 16 Super-Seniors and 8 Legends in the order of entries received. To guarantee a spot in the field, submit your entry as soon as possible. Once those divisions are filled, we will add additional flights to any division with additional entries in increments of 8 players. We will notify you if your planned division is already filled and you are on the waiting list pending an additional flight (in increments of 8 players); and, we will notify you when we add an additional fight and you are in the field. Anyone submitting an entry that doesn’t make it into the field will receive a full refund of your entry fee. Players will be seeded by the committee in the 16-person (or 8-person) brackets by handicap index and including any national or Virginia state amateur rankings.
(3) A box lunch will be included in the entry fee for all players on Monday 8 June (the clubhouse is closed for food service on Monday except for some drinks/snacks available in the pro shop). We have also increased the prize pool amounts to include $60 per match won (to cover at least the cost of a dozen golf balls in the pro shop). For those reasons, the entry fee is a little higher this year at $175.

Entries will be closed on Wednesday 3 June. Pairings and tee times will be published online and forwarded by email on or about Friday 5 June.

Day 1 – Play-in rounds: All players will play two 18-hole matches (36 holes on Day 1). You should only enter this tournament if you can play at least 36 holes on day 1. If a match is tied after 18 holes, the winner will be determined by sudden-death stroke play. Only those players who win both matches advance to day 2. Play on day 1wlll be in 4-somes by tee times beginning at 9:00 am with a dual-tee start from either #1 or #10 tee by division. Each 4-some will be made up of ¼ of the bracket (e.g. Group 1 will have #1 vs. #16 and #8 vs. #9 in the morning match; the two winners will play in the afternoon to determine who advances to the semi-finals. The two losers of the morning match will play each other for a consolation prize – $60 gift certificate). Day 2 – elimination matches – Play will be in 2-somes. Semi-Finals in the morning for 16-person brackets and finals in the morning for 8-person brackets; Finals in the afternoon for 16-person brackets. Those who lose their semi-final match are eliminated and do not play in the afternoon.

Play will be from the Fazio tees for Amateurs (age 49 and under) at about 7000 yds; Member tees for Seniors at about 6500 yds; Blue-White combo tees for Super-Seniors at about 6200 yds; and White-Green combo tees for Legends at about 5600 yds.

Practice rounds will be available starting May 26th, Tuesday-Thursday after 2:00 PM for $50+tax that includes a golf cart. Call the pro shop at 703-753-5922 up to 5 days ahead for a tee time. Do not just show up and ask for a practice round — any player showing up day of without a tee time will not be allowed to play.

Prizes will be paid in pro shop gift certificates as follows:
Players losing both matches on day 1 (0-2 record) receive no prizes.
Players winning 1 match on day 1 (1-1 record) receive $60
Players winning 2 matches but losing in S/F (2-1 record) receive $120
Players winning 3 matches but losing in finals (3-1 record) receive $180
Players winning 4 matches and flight championship receive $300 and a trophy

VSGA Points: Ranking points for Tier 3 events: If an event does not have stroke play qualifying, players must win one match to earn points.
Champion: 75 Points
Finalist: 50 Points
Semifinalist: 35 Points
Quarterfinalist: 20 Points
Round of 16: 10 Points
