Congratulations to Jon Zampedro (Pleasant Valley Golf Club) for winning the 2023 Northern Virginia Senior Amateur Championship!  Jon won the event at Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, VA with a score of 1-over par 108 in a rain-shortened 27-hole event in the Championship / Senior (age 55+) Division.

Dan Hosek and Dave Pulk finished tied at 112 four shots behind Zampedro, Dave Sharpe finished 4th at 113 and John Richards finished 5th at 114.  Harry Thomas (Washington Golf & CC) (6th), Dean Griffith (Blue Ridge Shadows GC) (7th), 2021 and 2022 defending champion Mike Howell (International CC) (8th), Steve Galing (Army Navy CC) (9th) and two-time former champion Mike McLister (Loudoun CC) (10th) round out the top 10 and earn VSGA ranking points.

There were 3 other divisions in the tournament and due to the starting order all 3 division were able to finish 18 holes on Tuesday before the storms hit.

A pre-senior (age 50-54) division was added this year for the first time but drew only 3 entrants.  After 1 entrant was a no-show, the two remaining players played head-to-head for the 1 prize which was won by Jon Krinn (Westfields GC) with a score of 155.

In the Super-Seniors (age 65+) division Mike Johnston (Evergreen CC) began the day in a 3-way tie with Kip Ritenour (Blue Ridge Shadows GC) and Bill Apple (Lansdowne) at 4-over par 75.  Mike had a 75 in round 2 which was good enough for a 1-shot win over a surging Richard Lion (Springfield CC), who started the day in 9th place and vaulted into a tie for 2nd place with a best-of-the-day round of 72, and Ron Clatterbuck (Evergreen CC).  Bill Apple finished in 4th place at 152 and Brad Moffett (Army Navy CC), Mike Nicewarner (Blue Ridge Shadows GC) and Dave Prokop (Evergreen CC)  finished tied in 5th place with a score of 155.

In the small 8-man Legends (age 70+) division tournament co-chairman Lynn Wessman (Army Navy CC) won by 1 shot with a score of 152 over Mike Brown (CC of Fairfax) at 153 and Robert Gardiner (South Riding GC) at 155.

We would like to thank all the participants who played in this event and showed great flexibility as we shifted from tee times to a shotgun start on Monday with less than 24 hours advance notice.

We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to Matt Loewenstein (General Manager) and Alex Titus (Assistant General Manager) at Laurel Hill Golf Club for their flexibility and outstanding support.  The golf course was in very good condition and proved a stern test of golf yielding no under-par rounds with a strong field of senior amateur golfers.
