2020 Potomac Challenge: FSSGAM team wins for 3rd straight year with a score of 17 ½ to 12 ½.

The 27^th annual Potomac Challenge matches between the Northern Virginia Golf Association Seniors and the Free State Seniors Golf Association of Maryland concluded today at the Trump National Golf Club, Washington, D.C.  The weather for the event conducted Tuesday and Wednesday 20-21 October was fabulous and the course conditions at Trump National were excellent.  It was a fantastic venue for the competition.

The Potomac Challenge is a two-day Ryder Cup-style competition with 12 players on each team and played using four 9-hole formats over two days.  The first day consists of a 9-hole 4-ball match and a 9-hole foursome match (select drive then alternate shot).  The second day consists of a 9-hole 2-man scramble and a 9-hole singles match.

The Maryland team played their way to a big lead on the first day (Tuesday, October 20^th) by winning the 4-ball matches 4 ½ to 1 ½, winning the foursome matches 4 to 2, and taking a commanding 8 ½ to 3 ½ point lead on the first day.

Trailing by 5 points after the first day, the Northern Virginia team needed to win 12 of the 18 points available on the second day to win the event.  However, the Northern Virginia team was only to tie the scramble format 3 to 3, and tie the singles matches 6 to 6 and unable to make up any ground on the Maryland team lead.

The Maryland team won the event for the 3^rd year in a row with a total score of 17 ½ to 12 ½.

The top point winners on the Northern Virginia team this year were Peter Jacobi (Army Navy CC) and Lynn Wessman (Army Navy CC) winning 3 ½ points for the super-seniors, Steve Galing (Army Navy CC) and Scott McNabb (Golf Club at Lansdowne) winning 3 ½ points for the seniors, and Mark Boedicker (RTJ Club) and John Lombardozzi (RTJ Club) winning 2 ½ points for the seniors.
