Congratulations to The Piedmont Club A-Team on winning the 2021 Northern Virginia Spring A-Team competition! This is the second time The Piedmont Club has won this team championship having previously won the competition in 2015 and finishing runner-up in 2014 and 2007.
The #2 overall seed Piedmont Club advanced to the finals by defeating the #7 seed Chantilly team in a squeaker by way of a sudden-death playoff (after a 9-9 tie) in the round of 8 on Saturday, April 10th, and by defeating the #3 seed Hidden Creek team 14-4 in the semi-finals on Sunday, April 11th.
The #4 seed Loudoun team advanced to the finals by defeating the #5 seed Belle Haven team 11-7 in the round of 8 on Saturday, April 10th, and by defeating the #1 seed Army Navy team 13-5 in the semi-finals on Sunday, April 11th.
Piedmont and Loudoun squared off in the final match on Saturday, April 17th.
The A-Team format is each twelve-member team plays three two-man matches at home and three two-man matches away. Each team competes in a better ball format (four-ball match play) at each club. One point is awarded (each) for winning the front nine, back nine and eighteen holes. One-half point is awarded (each) for a tie. The total number of points possible from a two-man team is three. The total number of points possible for the entire twelve-man team is 18. The matches are played at scratch and usually from the club’s championship tees.
Match results at Piedmont:
Match #1: Trey Treadwell and Chad Dally (Piedmont) faced Dan Hurley and Kevin Mclister (Loudoun) in the lead off group. Piedmont got up early winning the front 3 up. However the Loudoun team was not going to lay down. They stormed back with 4 birdies in a row winning 3 holes to get the match back to all square. A costly bogey on 17 by Loudoun allowed Piedmont to secure 2 points.
Match #2: Kyle Howard and Ken Wood (Piedmont) squared off with Joey Mclister and Micah Corda (Loudoun). Loudoun got up 1 early with a par on #2. The match remained that way until the par 3 6th with Piedmont winning with a conceded birdie. Howard/Wood won the 7th hole with another birdie to go 1 up. A solid par at the difficult par 4 9th secured the point and a 2 up lead. Another par win on 10 seemed to put the match in Piedmont’s control but Loudoun birdied 12 & 14 to get within 1. Halves on the remaining 4 holes resulted in another 2 points for Piedmont.
Match #3: The anchor match featured Brian Hill and Joey Boivin (Piedmont) against Lance Rice and Greg Brouse (Loudoun). After halving the first 2 holes Piedmont opened up a lead with back to back birdies on 3 & 4. A sloppy bogey by Piedmont gave Loudoun the 5th hole. Loudoun returned the favor on 7 & 8 leading to a 3 up lead after 9. Piedmont added wins on 10 and birdies on 15 & 17 to secure all 3 points.
Match results at Loudoun:
Match #1: Glenn McCloskey, PGA and Tony Aydelotte (Loudoun) faced Brian Agee and Nick Yates (Piedmont). Loudoun birdied the first two holes and held on to win the front nine to get 1 point. However, the Piedmont team rallied by winning the back nine and 18 to get 2 points.
Match #2: Terry Reilly and Tommy Harrison (Loudoun) faced Chad Hess and Kevin Reynolds. The Loudoun team was 1-down coming to the 9th hole and made birdie to win the hole and secure a tie for ½ point on the front nine. Piedmont won the back nine 1-up and secured 2 ½ points.
Match #3: Jeff Hall and Josh Mearkle (Loudoun) faced Trey Parrish and John Williams (Piedmont). The Piedmont team won the front nine 2-up and tied Loudoun on the back nine to secure another 2 ½ points.
